• Wallis and Futuna Mission Offering - South Pacific Division 2017

In Wallis and Futuna, located 500km north east of Fiji, much of the population don't know about the soon coming of Jesus. It's a message that the 17 baptised members of the only Adventist church in the island territory want to share with their fellow Wallisians. But they need our help.

Dozens of people are occupying the royal palace building on the French Pacific territory of Wallis and Futuna, the public broadcaster has said. The protestors are trying to prevent the enthronement of a new king, due to take place this Saturday. Last weekend, the Wallis Island chiefs chose Tominiko Halagahu, 57, to be the new Lavelua, or king. But some from rival royal families have refused to recognise the appointment, saying they should choose the king. Where is Wallis and Futuna? Wallis and Futuna is a group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean, between Samoa and Fiji. Culturally Polynesian, in 1961 it became an overseas prefecture of France. There are three traditional kingdoms in the territory, all of which have a degree of political power. In recent months, the two kingdoms of Sigave and Alo both chose new kings, according to Radio New Zealand. How is the king chosen? The title is not hereditary, but given to a person chosen from a group of royal families. The discussions on who to crown can take months of even years, according to TV France. The secession issue is often fraught, Radio New Zealand's Walter Zweifel who covers the Pacific Islands, told the BBC. The current dispute is over the monarch of the kingdom of Uvea on Wallis Island. It seems to have arisen because the chiefs named Tominiko Halagahu as king. But other royal families believe that should be their decision, and the chiefs should just carry out the coronation. Has something like this ever happened before? Long-serving monarch Tomasi Kulimoetoke ruled as Lavelua from 1959 until his death in 2007 at the age of 88. Two years before his death, rival clans tried to remove him, which led to an armed rebellion by his supporters. A French negotiator went to the island, but the eventual result was the Tomasi Kulimoetoke stayed on as king, FranceTV said. Since his death the legitimacy of kings and their political power has been in upheaval. Kapeliele Faupala was crowned in 2008, but in 2014 he was removed by powerful families because of his political intervention - namely sacking two prime ministers, according to local reports. The position has been vacant since. The French prefect that administers Wallis and Futuna told local media it would not interfere in the latest dispute, although security forces have been beefed up on the island from nearby New Caledonia, TV France reported.

More information about the video content bellow: 1. Tonga became known in the West as the Friendly Islands because of the congenial reception accorded to Captain James Cook on his first visit in 1773. He arrived at the time of the ʻinasi festival, the yearly donation of the First Fruits to the Tuʻi Tonga (the islands' paramount chief) and so received an invitation to the festivities. According to the writer William Mariner, the chiefs wanted to kill Cook during the gathering but could not agree on a plan. 2. The primary island, Tongatapu, has a number of tricks up its sleeve, such as the spectacular blowholes along the south western coastline. You’ll find four miles of coast with countless blowholes that can spout water 30 meters high. Go ahead and take bus from Nukualofa towards the village of Houma (Half an hour) and make sure to be there at high tide for any truly spectacular view. 3. The current royal dynasty of Tonga was founded in 1831 by Taufa’ahau Tupou, who took the name George I. He consolidated the kingdom by conquest and in 1875 granted a constitution. Tonga became independent on June 4, 1970. The government is largely controlled by the king, his nominees, and a small group of hereditary nobles. 4. Not much is known before European contact because of the lack of a writing system, but oral history has survived and been recorded after the arrival of the Europeans. By the 12th century, Tongans and the Tongan paramount chief, the Tuʻi Tonga, had a reputation across the central Pacific—from Niue, Samoa, Rotuma, Wallis & Futuna, New Caledonia to Tikopia—leading some historians to speak of a Tuʻi Tonga Empire. 5. Despite being a small country, Tonga has its own army. Furthermore, it participated in WWI, as part of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and in WWII. In recent times, Tongan soldiers were sent to Afghanistan and Iraq and participated in several peace keeping missions. 6. Located in Oceania, Tonga is an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, directly south of Samoa and about two-thirds of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand. Its 169 islands, 36 of them inhabited cover an 800-kilometre-long north-south line. The largest island, Tongatapu, is where the capital city of Nukuʻalofa is located. 7. The Free Wesleyan Church is the largest Methodist denomination in Tonga, and also the state church. Everyday life is heavily influenced by Polynesian traditions and especially by the Christian faith; for example, all commerce and entertainment activities cease on Sunday, from the beginning of the day at midnight, to the end of the day at midnight. The constitution declares the Sabbath sacred forever. The Mission would like to acknowledge the work of Elder Rakau from Epauto Seventh day Adventist Church in Port Vila who invited and sponsored Minister Solomoni Taipo from Fiji. Solomoni is a brave young man of God! Since June 2013 Solomoni who knew no one, didn't know Bislama took the challenge- went to live with the people on the island and help in anywhere he can in the communities. A local from the island, late Kopaji Maioho gave Solomoni a piece of land to build a church. Kopaji and his wife Esther Tou and his family supported him to build the church. The church was completed this year and was dedicated by Pr Jonathan Moses, Tafea District Leader. The church is named Imaraga Missionaries Seventh day Adventist Church. Imaraga means multiply. Futuna Paramount chief Johnny Naweiakasi opened the church. People, community and church leaders from all over the island of Futuna came for the church opening. Today Imaraga Missionaries Church has over 30 members. The church will begin layman training soon to resource and equip people to be missionaries for Jesus. After Kopaji died, his wife Esther and their children had no one to look after them. Solomoni went to live with the family in their tiny home and help in anywhere he can.
